LT Howard's Crew: LT Paul Howard (standing left), MAJ Howell (third from right) and LT Radtke (2nd from right). Edmund Smolinski flew with the Cornelison crew on November 10th. The aircraft went down in, or near, the North Sea. CPL Smolinksi was taken prisoner, winding up at STALAG LUFT IV near Gross Tychow. During the infamous march during January 1945, CPL Smolinski collapsed and was left for dead. The polish underground found him and eventually returned him. Ed was replaced for several missions after his loss. Once Howard became a lead pilot, the tail gun was manned by Jangula. Irving ended his combat tour early. The reasons are unknown. [Next] |
