Crew of the "Flak Plow" Standing (L to R): Wilbur Chapman (NG), Fred Kraft (WG), Leo O'Brian (TG), Phil Machek (ROG). Front (L TO R): Ed Hoffner (N), Jim Shaw (P), James Martin (B), George Ross (FEG). (reprinted from the O&W N/L Spring 93) The "Flak Plow" has the dubious distinction of being the first loss of the 834th BS. FLAK damaged 3 engines over the target near Koblenz, and the plane flew on with only #4 operating, and unable to feather #2. Unable to maintain altitude on one engine, they headed for friendly territory. Below, fog blanketed the ground. The crew was uncertain as to how far they would have to fly to get into friendly territory. Finally, out of altitude, and with engines #3 & #4 brought back into action, Jim Shaw put "Flak Plow" down in a potato patch. Spuds and mud flew everywhere and the aircraft came to a stop over a railroad embankment. Much to the crew's delight they put down at Wetteren, BE. By this time in allied hands! The crew offered to reimburse the farmer for the crop loss, but he graciously refused the offer. Later, girls from a local catholic school came to the aircraft and were offered a tour of the downed bomber. That evening, the crew was hosted by the town's mayor. This mission brought and exciting end to the combat tour of "Flak Plow!" |
