The Strandpromenade where a unit of approximately 100 Reichsarbeitsdienst men (Reichs Workers Service) formed a gauntlet for the airmen to pass through. In doing so the airmen were beaten with shovels.

It should be noted that the workers were directed by their supervisor to assault the airmen. While following orders, they did not use the force they could have given that the airmen survived the beatings and were able to continue their march for some distance. This would indicate that the workers used restraint, and were more humane than their supervisor and other antagonists.
