Das Rathaus
(The City Hall)

The first murder took place at the corner. One airman stumbled to the ground as a result of problems he had been having with the trousers of his flight suit, or due to exhaustion. His guard had struck him while he was on the ground, when suddenly another soldier, not part of the guard detail, had emerged from the crowd and shot the airman. The airman was taken to the aid station where he died several hours later.

The shooter was a guard at a Russian POW camp on the island. He alledgedly lost his family (wife and three children) in an earlier bombing of Hamburg, and was filled with vengence. He had heard of the American flyers, and declared to avenge his family. When his watch was over, he took his carbine and service pistol and went looking for the prisoners. After shooting the first airman, he went looking for the others, who had kept on marching.
