CAPT Bob Whitney sits in the cockpit of a German glider at an airfield in Stuttgart after the war. The Versailles treaty forbid the Germans from developing and maintaining a military air force. However, sport and civil aviation were permissible. The popularity of soaring was encouraged by the German government, which realized the potential for training pilots for the future. Many of the German Experten (Aces), such as Adolf Galland and Erich Hartmann, got their start in Gliders. (486th collection, 8th AF Museum via David Brown)
