SSGT Robert Stone was the radio operator and a gunner on the Hermann crew, 835th. On the mission of October 15th, the B17 they flew failed to become airborne on take-off and crashed. SSGT Stone and LT Hermann both survived the crash. SSGT Stone attempted to save his crewmates and perished as a result of his efforts. LT Hermann lived the remainder of his life in a VA hospital where he died in 1975.

The aircraft struck a farm house during its plunge. A young boy, Robert Smith, who was living with the farmer and his family died two days after the accident from burns he received.
