The "D" version had a greenhouse nose, which the Luftwaffe exploited for attacks on American heavy bombers. Both the B17 and the B24 were modified to sport turrets in the nose. This modification appeared first in the "H" model of the B24, and the "G" model of the 17 (with some innovative field modifications on late "F" models, too). The design of the B17 allowed for a chin turret, but the B24 had to have the turret go above the bombsight. This reduced the limited space in the nose of the Liberator. The greenish appearence of the glass is a result of a thick piece of glass placed in front of the gunner to offer some protection against enemy machine gun and canon fire. |
