This is a simulated view through the Norden Bombsight, courtesy of the B17 simulator, "B17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty Eighth." The bombardier has picked out the target against the background and starts calibrating his sight. Smoke screens, flak bursts, and clouds obscure the target making his job difficult. Once he has positively identified his target, he can lock the scope and begin making the corrections. The index window is on the right. The Marker in the window, on the left, indicates the bombing angle (or time of release). The marker on the right slides up as the bomber approaches the target. When the two meet the bombs are released. |
