In the photo abov, CAPT Bob Whitney stands at the center of the back row; LT Ogle stands at his left. LT Radtke stands at far left. Front row, far right is Abraham "Abby" Hornstein (aka Abbott Harle), and to his left is George Yep. LT Ogle and crew flew the mission to Berlin on 03 Feb 1945 with MAJ John L. Rex, Jr as the squadron air commander in the right seat. They were flying in "Lady V II" (#130) when their engines were hit by FLAK over the target and were forced to leave the formation just short of the Rally Point. Fifteen miles south of Lake Möritz, MAJ Rex decided to make a run for "Joe's Place" (Russia). They made a wheels up landing in Poland after crossing the front lines and the 17 suffered only minor damage. They were met by Polish Partisans who then turned them over to the Russian Army. Russian General Ceckmosof entertained his American guests at dinner. The crew was returned to England by the way of Kiev, Tehran, Cairo, Naples, Marseilles and Paris. |
