(486th collection, 8th AF Museum via David Brown) Hughes and Crew flew Lady V (#856) on mission #91 to Köln, GR. They were shot up by flak and forced down near Amiens (Lille?), FR. On a later mission, #127, the prop on #4 ran away on take-off. LT Hughes and his copilot used the feathering controls to reduce the RPM. Oil pressure dropped dangerously low, but they were able to assemble with the group and comlete the mission. On the return they tried to feather the prop, but couldn't leaving it to windmill. LT Hughes was able to make a safe landing at Sudbury. For their actions, the Hughes crew was nominated as Crew of the Week and entitled to a 96 hour pass the next time they became eligible for a 48 hour pass. |
