A very well done web site.
I have a uniform from an estate of lawrence swaney, 835/486th Bomb group (H) Wanted to find info on this navigator, who did 33 missions. Archive was informative, pictures were great. Would anybody have any photos of this man, and know where I could get an account of his awards?
To all 8th Air Force Veterans, please accept my thanks and appreciation for the sacrifices you, your families and your generation made to protect the freedoms we now enjoy. I am a Marine Vietnam Veteran, and the son of a 10th Air Force veteran that served in CBI. You should all know that every year I speak to college students on the subject of Vietnam, but before I begin, I always spend some time talking about the real defenders of freedom, the WWII veterans, and especially the 8th Air Force.
God bless all of you. I, and thousands like me, will miss you and your generation as we move forward into terrible dangerous times.

I visited Sudbury in May of 1999. Not much left that I could see except a few buildings in the technical site that make up a small industrial estate. Saw the Memorial and sections of runways, peri tracks and hardfstands.
I somehow logged onto your site and found the story of Lt. Murphy. I went through many of the pages provided, but now I can get back to them. What happened to him and the three others? Were they shot or hung by the SS? Did they make it back home? Please, I must know. Kevin M. Pearson Anchorage, Alaska
My father was SSGT Joe Davis, and he served as a waist gunner in the 486 Bomb Group, 835 Bomb Squadron in Nathan Adler's Crew. He was shot down 08/04/44 and was a POW until the end of the war. He passed away September 16, 1983. I don't know if any of his crew is still alive, but would love to communicate with anyone that may have known him. Thank you for this website. I am always proud when I see my father's name associated with the 8th Army Air Corp.
My father was a bombadier in the 8th Air Force bomb group 486 bomb squadron 832. I appreciate your site. Thank you.

My grandfather, Vernon P. Wiedel flew in the 486th. He was a radio operator and He flew with Lt. Mullin for most of his campaign. He resides in Columbia Maryland and is still married to his wartime sweetheart Martha. I showed him this site and of course he was excited to see his name on the roster. I have numerous pictures that I would like to send to you of his crew. How would I go about doing that? A funny story of how small this world really is. My Grandfather, Vernon "Buzz" Wiedel was attending a church event this past weekend and struck up a conversation with a gentleman who spoke broken english. Come to find out, this gentleman was from Germany and flew a german messerschmidt against the B-17's out of frankfurt during the war. Out of the 50 pilots in his station, he was the only one not shot down during the war. He fought many missions against the flying fortresses and still to this day respects the courage of the men in the B-17's. It's ironic how my grandfathers old enemy now sits beside him and prays with him at church. Thanks for this site. Keep up the great work!

Gibbs, Robert Seabury INMAN, SC -- Robert Seabury Gibbs, of Windmill Hill Road, Inman, SC, died Monday, September 9, 2002 in Mary Black Hospital. Born in Providence, R.I., he was the son of James Gibbs and Helen Seabury Gibbs. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Kelly Gibbs. During World War II, he was stationed in Sudbury, England with the 8th Air Force. He was a B-17 pilot (486th Group) with 30 bombing missions over Germany. Thirty-eight years later Bob's dream has finally come to fruition. He was preceded in death by his beloved stepdaughter, Cheryl Porter. anyone know my father austin gerhard 835th if so please contact me thanks bruce
I enjoyed visiting this site very much. My father was James H. Brown,2nd LT,pilot and squadron leader 486th(H),832nd/833rd. Jack Crabtree and Robert A. Harper were members of his crew. My father passed away in August,1985, but had related many stories about his training in the USAAF. He had many interesting good memories of all the friends he made and was very fond of his air crew. I would like to join the 486th Bomb Group Association in memory of my father and would like to meet any of the serviving members of his crew and others. I served six years in the USCGR as a Port Securityman. I also fly with the USCGAUX and USCG as an Air Observer/Aircrew. Please feel free to contact me.
I was looking on the internet for anything that might have to do with my last name and to possibly find relatives when I came across this site. Since "Hohman" is such an unusual last name, I was wondering if Lt. Thomas Hohman, a pilot of a plane in the 486th. Bomber group would have any relation to me. If anyone has any information on him, the plane he flew when he was shot down, or anything else, please contact me at slacker250*lycos.com
Thanx, Ben
Walkup, Ray T - Just joined our local CAF wing in Kansas City. I have not had much of a chance to talk with him yet but hope to learn more about his experiences flying a B-17. If you need to reach him I can give you his contact info. Jim Shryock Heart of America Wing - CAF www.kcghostsquadron.org
My Brother and I ahve been searching for years for pictures of the plane our father flew on (Little Butch Rodney Rocks) and thanks to your site we now have some really great photos. Keep up the great work.

I enjoyed your website very much. My father was LT. Russell S Knapp ( you have him as Knopp which was a typo in the army that was not corrected until 1945 !) He was a lead navigator in the 833rd BS and his pilot was Lt. Ernest Berry. I can add a few things to your data bank: 1. My father was discharged in 1945 (as were most of the other members) and enrolled at Columbia Law School. He then went on to a distinguished carreer in corporate law and retired about five years ago. He lives with my mother in New York City and Ridgefield Connecticut. 2. He retired as a full Colonel. 3. He won the DFC with two oak leaf clusters as well as the Air Medal with two or three clusters. 4. The name of his ship was "Superstitious Aloysius" (both the B24H and the B17G.) 5. Several years ago, while in the UK, I visited the old base at Sudbury. One or two qwonset (sic) huts remain along with parts of the Tarmac and one of the pubs that has photos of many of the members of the 486th. I will pass along the name of this site to my Dad and he may be able to add some more information. I know that he has MANY MANY PHOTOGRAPHS of crew and bombing missions that he may scan in. Thanks again! Albert B. Knapp MD
Thanks for a job well done
