The principal changes in the Intelligence Section during
November were the result of the Group's transfer to another
Combat Wing. The 92nd Combat Wing, of which the 486th Group
has been a part since our arrival in the European Theatre of
Operations, was terminated during the month and we were
transferred to the 4th Wing. Major Ollie Davis, A-2 of the
92nd Wing, was transferred to a similar position in the 13th
Wing. The A-2 of our new Wing is Major E.C. Leonard who paid
us a visit immediately after the transfer. We were pleased
to find that, Captain G.T. Brown, who spent a very pleasant
week with us last summer, is also in the Intelligence Section
at 4th Wing Headquarters.
With the end of the 92nd Wing, Captain Crabill returned to
duty with us and with him came Lieutenant Arnold Schmidt and
two clerks. We sent another clerk to 4th Wing, but the
accessions made it possible to establish four briefing teams,
a thing we had wanted to do for a long time. Now a man is
not subject to an all night session oftener than every
fourth night. The Group has not flown many missions in
November but a number of missions were briefed and scrubbed
before takeoff.
When the 92nd Wing came to an end, the former Wing War
Room was made available for use as a Crew Library. It is a
larger room and has the added advantage of some small rooms
nearby for the use of Public Relations. So, only about a
month after the original Crew Library was opened, the furniture
and exhibits were moved to the new location and a new set of
maps and decorations put up.
We now realize that it was very convenient to have Wing
Headquarters on the same Base with us. It was the custom for
Wing A-2 to give us the target as soon as they received it,
instead of our having to wait until it came through on the
teletype. In cases where there was a limited amount of time
between the warning order and briefing it was a great
advantage to have the target earlier. The briefing officers
could study the target, the flak maps could be got out, and the
duty bombardier and navigator could start their preparation.
On November 7, Lieutenant Santaniello was transferred to
other duties on the field and Lieutenant Russell assumed
charge of the briefing block in addition to his other duties.
