that the navigator and I had to share one jack box where heated cords were plugged in. We alternated every ten minutes. As we approached the target I saw a few bursts of flak ahead of us, but never did see any real close. The navigator dropped the bombs by pushing the salvo switch when the lead plane released its bomb load. I thought I saw a ME 262, but it may have been a P51 with extra gas tanks under the wings. Six enemy planes attacked the group ahead of us and P51s were zooming all over the sky. One B17 was lost out of that formation. Temperature was -38 degrees at 26000 feet. We bombed a small arms plant at Weimar with some of the bombs hitting in that general area, but a large percentage going into the town itself.

30. Nürnberg, Germany - 02/21/45 - My very last mission found me just as frightened as if it were my first one. Briefed at 4:00, told about two plans of "B," Nürnberg, and "A," Berlin. Shortly after we took off we were informed that plan "B" would be followed, which made everybody quite glad. I flew in the tail and took life easy on my last mission, just enjoying the view and waving at fellows in other planes. We hit a marshalling yard through about 8/10 coverage with large visual patches. Flak was light, at our altitude, but several xxxx to either side of the formation. Temperature was xxx at 25000.
