"5 Grand" was celebrated as the 5,000th B17 manufactured during the war. Those who helped build her were encouraged to sign her hull. The weight of ink caused a loss of performance, but were never removed. The aircraft was originally flown to England by the LT Unger crew. The aircraft was handed off to the 96th Bomb Group.
