The airfields at Villacoublay, FR, were the temporary home of the third Group of Jagdgeschwader 26 (III./JG 26), "Schlageter," in the fall of '44. This group was once commanded by Major Adolf Galland who had, by then, become the General of the Fighter Arm. Current command was under Major Klaus Mietusch. JG 26, along with JG 2 "Richthofen," were the front line of defense for the Third Reich against the Mighty Eighth Air Force. This Fighter unit was known among the airmen of the 8th as "the yellow nose bastards" (for the yellow cowlings of their aircraft early in the war) or as "the Abbeville Kids."
