SGT Robert McCadden, 832nd

On a mission following D-Day, the bombardier of the Pearson crew called bombs away, but two bombs failed to release. The radio operator, SGT McCadden, confirmed the situation, and told the bombardier to leave the doors open. With no oxygen mask, flak bursting all around, and standing in an open bomb bay at 22,000 ft, SGT McCadden worked on the bombs trying to release them manually. Using a hammer SGT McCadden eventually freed the bombs and the crew completed the mission.
