The 486th Group flew only 11 missions in November, the smallest number we have flown in any month. This was due principally to unfavorable weather. The missions were all within Germany, with the exception of one on the border of Germany, and were much "rougher" than before. In fact, the combat crews complained that the tour of operations should be reduced since they were having to fly more hazardous missions than the crews who used to have "milk runs" from time to time.
Seven of our aircraft were lost during the month, the largest number lost in any month so far. Two of the seven crews returned, however. Five of these seven airplanes were lost on missions to Merseburg and Lutzkendorf, targets which the crews have come to dread. Other planes had to land in Belgium or France but were able to be flown back to England.
Four of the missions were against synthetic oil plants (three times to Merseburg) and one was a benzine plant, three were tactical targets, in support of the ground forces, two were airfields, and one was a Marshalling Yard.
Because of weather conditions, one target could not be attacked and, for the same reason, all bombing, except in one mission, was pathfinder or Micro-H.
