The Walthall crew, 832nd, was shot down on Aug 4, 1944. The only survivors of the crew were LT Ingerson, and SGT Rachak. LT Ingerson went to the officer POW camp at Sagan (Stalag Luft III), while SGT Rachak went to the enlisted camp at Gross Tychow (Stalag Luft III). While there, SGT Rachak memorialized his crew, and his camp buddies by embrodering his hankie. The thread came from discarded clothing and parachutes. SGT Rachak would unravel the threads to make the necessary threads. When he returned home, his mother framed the hankie, and it remains framed to this day. (courtesy of Kazmer Rachak, 832nd). |
