On September 5th, 1944, the 486th suffered two
losses in a mid-air collision while attacking targets near Brest,
France. #875 piloted by LT Crawford crashed off the coast, while the
aircraft #949 piloted by LT Eachen crashed near Brest. The wreckage
of #949 was located in a famer's field in the Spring of 2002. The
crash site was excavated,
the materials idenfitied and the mission information catalogued.
significant pieces of the wreck of #949 were put on display early
May 2004. Here you can see parts of the main landing gear and an
engine.
