On November 16th, 1944, the Rapp Crew bailed out of their stricken bomber while trying to make it back to Station 174. The aircraft cashed in the town of Tielt-Winge, Belgium, resulting in property damage, and the deaths of two woman, one of whom was pregnant. For more details see: Rapp Crew On November 16th, 2004 a memorial for the women, and the unborn child was dedicated near the spot of the crash. This building is at the address Wersbeekstraat 72, Tielt-Winge, Belgium, and is the only one in the little street with the houses Wersbeekstraat 68 and 70 that were spared in the crash. The plaque was placed at this location, because the house 72 is at the corner of the main Wersbeekstraat (which connects Tielt-Winge with Bekkevoort, the nearest town) and has good visibility for the public. Otherwise, it would be at a very hidden place somewhere in the back and hard to find. (courtesy of Mayor Rudi Beeken, Tielt-Winge, Belgium) |
